Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a severe complication of diabetes mellitus (DM). They often result from lesions in the plantar tissue, on the bottom of the feet, that can go unnoticed following the damage to the peripheral nervous system and subsequent loss of foot sensation, termed as diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN).
DM currently affects 60 million European adults and more than 400 million people worldwide, half of which have developed DPN. It has been estimated that around 50% of DPN patients will develop DFUs in the following years, which can result in amputations 25% of the time with a 5-year mortality rate of 40%.
Due to low quality of life resulting from difficulties with the healing of DFUs, potential amputations, and the costs associated, the best solution is prevention.
Containing a pair of smart insoles and an app, Path Feel will revolutionize DFU prevalence through personalized medicine, integrated care and diagnostics.
Path Feel’s insoles detect elevated pressure and temperature on the bottom of the feet and provide vibrational feedback in response. This facilitates behavioural change through alerts, ultimately preventing DFUs whilst improving mobility. The real-time pressure and temperature data and activity levels are analyzed through the smartphone application.
Path Insight is a secured, web based dashboard solution that visualises the data gathered by the insoles. Path Insight is intended to be used by clinicians, who can oversee the care of their patients.
Via Path Insight, a clinician, or healthcare professional (HCP), can review your data and events that triggered a graded alarm system so that if you’re at-risk you can be prioritized. Personalised analysis displays plantar pressure and temperature, activity levels and direct input by the patient.
